Kent Landscaping have just completed this terrace installation using a combination of sleepers, hardcore, decking and fencing to turn a unusable area into a highly functional outdoor area.

We always work with our client to offer the correct combination of materials and the finished product is a beautifully terraced garden project. A clever use of a steep slope to create structured, usable outdoor spaces.

The design combines timber landscaping with natural stone paving, producing a clean, modern look that blends well with the surrounding greenery and brick architecture. The garden steps lead from a lower patio up through several raised planting tiers, ending at a small decked area at the top.

Materials Used

  • Retaining Walls & Steps - Pressure-treated softwood sleepers used horizontally and vertically to form strong retaining walls and steps. The timber is treated for ground contact and longevity in a British winter.
  • Decking - Grooved softwood decking boards providing grip and a neat finish at the upper terrace.
  • Venetian Fencing Panels - Offering privacy while maintaining airflow and light, matching the timber used in the garden structure.
  • Natural Sandstone Paving - Laid in a random & rectangular pattern with tight joints; pale grey tones complement the wood and brickwork.
  • Soil Beds - Fresh topsoil is all ready for the client to plant their choice of shrubs, flowers or vegetables.

Techniques Used

  • Terracing & Retaining - We divided the slope into multiple levels using timber sleeper retaining walls, each back-filled with compacted hardcore and topsoil to prevent any movement.
  • Step Construction - Sleepers are stacked and bolted together, forming solid risers and treads. We installed gravel or drainage channels behind each wall to prevent water build-up.
  • Decking Installation - we fixed boards to a treated timber frame with stainless screws, ensuring durability and water resistance.
  • Paving - We installed a compacted type1 sub-base with a mortar bed to support the stone slabs, laid with a slight fall, again for drainage.
  • Fencing - Venetian posts set in concrete footings for a crisp, uniform appearance.
